About:
Little Aid was set up over a year ago, when the conflict in Sri Lanka had ended and many people were displaced from their homes, had lost their families, and lacked basic needs such as food, clothes and shelter. The name Little Aid came from the idea that even the smallest donation could help someone in need. We helped to provide these needs as well as rehabilitate people. Since then Little Aid has expanded to work with local organisations in need of support, to rebuild communities in the poorest parts of Sri Lanka. This includes providing useful medicines to local hospitals, rehousing children who were soldiers in the conflict, opening computer centres for children, providing educational materials such as books to underfunded schools, sponsoring children in education at poorer schools for basic needs such as food, building a well for a fishing community, and many more. We are proud to work with different organisations, different religions, and ethnic backgrounds, bringing people together from all walks of life to help people who are most at need in Sri Lanka.
Mission
Our projects are varied and you can see more information on what we are doing right now at www.littleaid.org.uk
We consult with those people we are working with to find out what their needs are. For example, before the well project, we held a consultation meeting with fishermen and other members of the local community to establish their water needs and a timeframe for the project. When internally displaced people after the war were living in camps temporarily, we were one of the only charities who had a good relationship with those in charge and were able to establish what was lackinbg, eg food, clothing and shelter, and provided those accordingly. Recently there was a flood in the Gampala district of Sri Lanka, and we consulted local priestsin the communty affected to find out what aid was necessary and send food bags following their advice.
Services
What have we done and what are we doing?
The money you donate will be used for longstanding projects such as:
Providing educational materials such as books for children in underfunded schools
Providing funding for the education, food, and housing needs of children in a school in Jaffna
Providing necessary medicines to small hospitals in North and East Sri Lanka
Providing a well for a fishing community in North Sri Lanka, and potentially further wells in other parts if Sri Lanka
We also hope to start the following projects:
Providing bikes for hire for children in remote communities to use to get to school
Providing medical textbooks to medical school libraries in Sri Lanka.
And for emergency projects as they arise, such as the Food Aid project for the flood victims of the Gampala district.
